Get Your Kicks with Pat!

Let’s face facts, whether it’s healthy or not, a cold soda can be really refreshing.  Those sodas with real cane sugar and all natural flavorings are better for us and usually delicious to boot.  On a hot summer day, I certainly look forward to a delicious soda waiting for me at the end of whatever adventure I have cooked up.  But wait! Carting around soda bottles or cans in my pack is not cool or refreshing; they are the opposite of ultra light.  Another concern is all that plastic we are using, which we have to pack in and out of the campsite!

Enter Pat’s Backcountry Beverage. I met the guys at Pat’s BCB at OR a couple months ago.  You may remember me mentioning them in our OR round up, and I was so impressed! Now I am excited to say that we have a whole slew of their brand new products in stock now at the MPGear warehouse.  With their sweet set up kit, you can keep your backpacking trip light and green!

Pat's RootBeerThe kit is a great way to start out with Pat’s Backcountry Beverages.  You get the special bottle that allows you to carbonate 16oz of beverage, you get all 5 flavors, and 6 Activator Powder Packs which is what creates the bubbles!  Once you have tasted all the flavors you can come back and get the flavor concentrates separately at our store as well.  I have already tried the Barefoot Root Beer and loved it! It is less like a mass-produced soda, and more similar to the small-scale sodas you see in the shelf of your grocery store.  I am sure I will like all the flavors, but I am really excited to try the PomaGranite Cola.  That is their answer to cherry cola, it sounds really unique and pretty delicious!

So why are we so excited about Pat’s Backcountry Beverages? We can take them on the trail! I would carry a water bottle for a day hike, backpacking, camping or paddling trip anyway – I can just use this one for water and then when I want soda, I can mix some up by bringing along 1 activator pouch and 1 flavor concentrate pouch.  Literally 2 tiny pouches is all I need to pack in for a whole bottle full (16oz) of delicious natural soda! Save your back and the planet by making your own soda.  Please remember to use clean, filtered or treated water to make your sodas!

For the DIYers out there, we are sharing a recipe for soda concentrate you can make on your own.  Thanks to Pat’s Backcountry Beverage for sharing this gem with the world! (For the rest of us we can get soda concentrate refills on fantastic flavors like Terra Cola, Lemon Clime and Ginger Trail at
