After serving a two year blood doping suspension, Alexandre Vinokourov attacked the final 500 meters faster then his fellow competitor and secured a win for team Astana in the classic Liege-Bastogne-Liege. It was a long day in the saddle but Vino proved to be the strongest over the 258km course powering his Specialized bike with SRAM Red drivetrain and Zipp wheels over the finish line in 6 hours and 37 minutes.
“I’ve returned stronger… I’ve completed my punishment so I don’t see why I shouldn’t comeback”, stated Vino.
The skeptics will stain this victory with doubt, as did those who lined the street booed. But the crowd is fickle and if Vinokourov remains clear of of future testing scandals he will slowly regain the admiration, or at least the tolerance of those who booed him that day. Vino, just keep standing on those pedals and rotating those Zipp wheels.
